Statement from William C. Velásquez Institute President Antonio Gonzalez
Obama Ends 'Wet Foot, Dry Foot' Cuba Policy

President Obama took an other important step toward normalizing relations with Cuba by ending 'Wet Foot, Dry Foot'. 'Wet Foot, Dry Foot' was an outdated dangerous policy applied to only Cubans that caused numerous deaths of migrants while creating a black market in human trafficking.  Obama's change is consistent with US laws and will put Cuban migrants in the same process as other migrants entering the US.

Cubans  seeking asylum in the US with legitimate claims will still be afforded the opportunity under existing US law. Cubans migrating legally to the US will still receive a fast-track to permanent residency under the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966.

WCVI and Latinos across the US and Latin America and the Caribbean praise this move which further heals US relations with Cuba.

As President Obama concludes his final term he deserves thanks for his multiple actions to improve US-Cuba relations.

WCVI once again calls on Congress to repeal the US embargo on Cuba
