PRESS STATEMENT January 26, 2016 For Immediate Release Contact: Jorge-Mario Cabrera (562) 243-5559 jmcabrera@chirlafund.org Immigrant-Friendly Legislator Scorecard Points to More Work Needs Doing in CA Largest immigrant rights organization issues Legislative Scorecard for California Los Angeles - The CHIRLA Action Fund, the political arm of one of the largest immigrant rights organization in California, issued Monday the 2015-2016 Legislative Scorecard identifying critical votes in the California Assembly and Senate on issues important to aspiring citizens and Latino communities. CHIRLA analyzed lawmaker's votes on 23 proposals impacting immigrants and their children in the areas of criminal and environmental justice, access to public benefits, and civil and labor rights. These proposals all date back to the most recent legislative calendar year of 2015. A sample of the bills analyzed include: a) SB 4 (Lara) which expands healthcare coverage for all children in the state regardless of immigration status; b) AB 953 (Weber) which aims to curb the harmful and unjust practice of racial profiling; and, c) AB 1352 (Eggman) which ends unintended immigration consequences for non U.S. citizens who complete a deferred entry of judgement program. "The Scorecard is designed to provide the public with information about how their state legislator voted on bills covering these important issues," said Angelica Salas, CHIRLA Action Fund's Board Chair. Only ten (10) California Assembly members out of an eighty-member caucus received the coveted 100% Score. Recently-elected Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-63rd) leads the group which includes Autumn Burke (D-62nd), Chris Holden (D-41st), Miguel Santiago (D-53rd), and Phil Ting (D-13th). On the California Senate, thirteen (13) out of forty (40lawmakers received a 100% score. Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon (D-24th) leads the group which includes Senate Majority Leader Bill Monning (D-17th), Ben Allen (D-26th), Isadore Hall, III (D-35th), Ricardo Lara (D-33rd), Carol Liu (D-25th), and Fran Pavley (D-27th). "The analysis points to a state where immigrant integration leadership by most Democrats follows no other nationally. Everywhere you look, California is changing. And yet, based on this Scorecard, the Republican Party fails to meet the challenge of a 21st century multicultural electorate," said Diana Colin, Programs Director for the CHIRLA Action Fund. "On an election year with high stakes, we will keep a close eye on the California legislature and mobilize our community to keep our lawmakers accountable, regardless of party affiliation," added. < Hemos sabido de niñas migrantes que han sido violadas y están embarazadas en los centros de detención. Niños que están compariendo celda con 5 a 10 menores. Las celdas deben de tener a lo máximo, cinco personas. Sabemos de dos jovencitos que acababan de salir que han estado allí tres meses, cuando tienen que haber tenido menos de 72 horas, de acuerdo a reglamentos del Departamento de Migración.>
