Centro KNIGHT para el Periodismo en las Américas dicta curso Journalism 2.0

Short Courses of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas
Knight Center Accepting Applications for Online Course in Spanish: Journalism 2.0

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas will offer its introductory course to digital journalism in Spanish, Journalism 2.0, for journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean from Jan. 26 to Feb. 27, 2009. Spaces are limited, and applications will be accepted online until Jan. 11.
The course, which is free of charge, will be taught by Colombian journalist Julio César Guzmán, former editor of Colombia's leading news site, ElTiempo.com. It is based on the books Journalism 2.0: How to Survive and Thrive, a digital literacy guide for the information age, by U.S. journalist, Mark Briggs, and How to Write for the Web by Guillermo Franco of Colombia.

The class will be conducted entirely on line and will cover five main areas:
*Introduction to Journalism 2.0. Understand the opportunities and challenges of practicing journalism in the digital age.
*Web 2.0 and the Future. Learn how Web 2.0 sites expand the realm and responsibilities of today’s journalists.
*Blogs, Breaking News, and Headlines (Writing for the Web). Explore and critique the world of blogs, and learn to write strong web headlines.
*Multimedia Basics. Explore basic practices in photography and video production, and experiment with the technology.
*Multimedia Planning. Learn what makes a good multimedia story and how to produce these pieces.

Students will have several weekly assignments, all of which will be performed on line. They include viewing video lectures and PowerPoint presentations, reading lecture materials, and participating in discussion forums with the instructor and classmates.
Participants will also conduct weekly skills assignments, and one exam, which they will submit online for comment and grading by the instructor. Students will work at their own pace, according to their own schedules. Those who complete the course will receive a certificate from the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.
The course is offered to journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean. Priority will be given to reporters and editors working full time for print, broadcast, or online media who have basic knowledge of computers and Internet and access to a digital camera for use in the course.
Given the introductory nature of the course, participants should not have more than two years experience working with blogs, or using Web 2.0 toold like flickr.
Journalists can apply until Jan. 11, 2009 at 5 p.m. (Austin, Texas time) here: http://www.engr.utexas.edu/sos/survey/66936014/index.cfm

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
