Immigrant Rights Conference in Los Angeles

Toward Comprehensive Immigration Reform: Next StepsFull Rights for All Immigrants! Legalization Now!

Saturday, July 11, 9am-1pmLoyola Law School Student Center919 Albany Street, Los Angeles 90023In Los Angeles, the struggle for full legalization confronts a decisive moment--which way forward? The promises of President Barack Obama--legislative action in his first 100 days in office, and immigration reform before the end of his first year--have been revealed as empty campaign rhetoric. The "Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition" is calling on progressives in organized labor, attorneys, pro-immigrant rights activists and others to be a part of a serious political conversation about where we go from here, and how do we get full rights for undocumented workers.Representatives of each of the organizations in the "Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition" will speak on educational and discussion-oriented panels, along with the following individuals: California Senator Gil Cedillo, California Assembly member Kevin de Leon, and L.A. City Council member Jose Huizar. Representing organized labor will be the President of Local 300 of the Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA) Mr. Sergio Rascon, Mr. Jose Lara and Dr. John Fernandez will speak on behalf of the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA). Local immigration attorneys Mr. Victor Nieblas (Loyola Immigration Law Professor), and Mr. Carlos Holguin (co-counsel with the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law), along with UCLA Professor Dr. Juan Gomez-Quiñones and former representative of Mexicans residing abroad before the Mexican government, Dr. Juan Hernandez, have also confirmed their participation.Progressive organizations who will speak at the conference include: ANSWER Coalition, Hermandad Mexicana Nacional, Union de Inmigrantes Guatemaltecos, Latino Movement USA, and many others.
